TIDE

TIDE

Tides are the ocean’s slow in-and-out motion that happens every day. The Moon’s gravity pulls ocean water toward it, making a high tide in some places and low tides in others. It usually happens twice a day: the water level rises and falls as if the sea is breathing.

Why it matters: Tides shape beaches and schedule life for crabs, birds, and fish.

Fun Fact: Some places have mega-tides that rise and fall higher than a house!

Say it like this: TYDZ

Your turn: Make a tiny “shore” with a towel on one side of a baking dish. Add a cup of water to show high tide (water covers more “beach”), then scoop some out to show low tide.

We have something for you: watch this video of the highest tide.
