Let me take you on a new adventure deep into the heart of Indonesia, a land of thousands of islands and endless blue seas. I discovered the Bajau people, also known as the Sea Nomads, an amazing community who live almost entirely on the water!
These extraordinary people have adapted to life on the open sea, spending most of their time navigating the waves and diving for food.
The Bajau live on traditional boats, with homes that drift from one island to another. They have a deep connection to the ocean and rely on it for their survival.
Superhuman Abilities
One of the most fascinating things about the Bajau is their ability to hold their breath for a really long time, and are able to dive deep to hunt fish and gather shellfish.
Over many generations, their bodies have adapted to life underwater. Scientists believe their larger spleens, which store oxygen-rich blood, help them dive to amazing depths. Isn't that incredible?
A Culture Rich in Tradition
Even though they live on the move, the Bajau have a beautiful cultural heritage. They speak their own language and have unique music and dance traditions. Their songs often celebrate the sea and their special connection to it.
A Vulnerable People
One big challenge for the Bajau is that many don’t have official citizenship. Since they live at sea, no single country officially recognises them. This makes it hard for them to access things like healthcare, education, and basic services. Many Bajau children grow up without going to school, learning instead through stories and oral traditions passed down by their families.
Their way of life is also at risk from modern development and environmental changes. With fewer fish and more buildings on the coast, the Bajau’s future is uncertain.
It’s so important that we recognise and protect the Bajau's unique way of life. By learning about and appreciating their culture, we can help support their future and the traditions that make them so special.
Here are some fun activities for you.
🛖Research: Learn more about the Bajau people, their history, and their unique culture.
🛖Write a Story: Write a short story about young Bajau divers and their adventures.
🛖Bajau Song & Dance Time: Create your own sea-inspired rhythm or movement. Try mimicking the swaying of boats or gentle ocean waves.
From spiky sea urchins to speedy dolphins, the ocean shows us one thing: being diverse makes the sea (and the world) more beautiful!
