Hiya, Bubble Buddies! I love swimming around my coral home, but sometimes I wonder... who really rules all this splishy-splashy water? Well, a long, long time ago, the ancient Greeks believed the ocean had a powerful boss: Poseidon! And let me tell you, he wasn’t just any sea creature. Nope, he was a god! With a beard big enough to hide starfish in, and a powerful trident. Pretty epic, right?
A Family of Gods
Let me swim you through his story, but hold onto your goggles, because it’s going to be a splashy ride!
The ocean isn’t just waves and fish; it’s filled with stories passed down through time. Long before we studied it with machines, people imagined gods and monsters in its depths.
Poseidon ruled over oceans, storms, and everything that splashed, swam, or sank!
In Greek mythology, Poseidon was one of the Big Three gods, right up there with his brothers Zeus (god of the sky) and Hades (god of the underworld). Poseidon’s kingdom? The entire ocean!
He lived in a shiny underwater palace made of coral and gems. Imagine a sea castle where dolphins danced and seahorses pulled his chariot, seriously, that’s how cool he was.
As the god of the sea, Poseidon had all kinds of wild creatures in his world: sea serpents, giant squids, water horses, and more.
Poseidon’s trident was like a magical remote control for the sea, it could calm the waves, stir storms, or even poke new islands into existence. It could also create sink ships and summon sea monsters!
If you ever see the ocean go from calm to stormy in a second, it might be Poseidon having a mood swing. Yes, Poseidon had a bit of a temper, kind of like when you, kids, have big feelings and throw a bit of a tantrum. The difference is that his tantrums could mean giant waves, crashing storms, or even earthquakes. But just like with kids, things usually calm down, and everything ends up okay… usually. Hopefully.
A Powerful Protector
Even with his mood swings, Poseidon looked after sailors and sea creatures. Many fishermen and travellers prayed to him before heading out to sea, hoping for safe travels and good luck with their catch.
Fun Facts About Poseidon
Horse Lover: Some stories say he created the first horse by striking the ground with his trident.
City Builder: He helped build the city of Troy, a famous city from ancient Greek myths.
Trickster God: Sometimes, Poseidon can be a bit of a trickster. He once turned a man into a dolphin!
So, next time you're at the beach, remember the mighty Poseidon. He's watching over the ocean, making sure it's safe and exciting!
Time to play!
🔱 Read a book about Greek mythology: There are many great books about Greek mythology, I like D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths with beautiful illustrations.
🔱 What if: Imagine you were a sea god or goddess for a day. What would be your name? What ocean power would you have? Would you make coral castles, summon dolphins to dance, or whisper secrets to whales? Play with your friends, it will be a lot of fun and create posters for each new sea god!
🔱 Build Poseidon's castle If you are at the beach you can make it with sand, shells and any material you find there. If not, get creative! Remember to have a look at the old Greek building, they were awesome.
🔱 Go for a walk on the beach, by the sea, or a lake or a river. Explore the natural world. Collect seashells, stones and driftwood.
🔱 Poseidon's Splashy Portrait Download the drawing of the mighty Poseidon and bring the underwater world to life! Add your own fish, corals, or some of your favourite Bubble Buddies swimming around him. Then colour it in using your brightest and boldest ocean shades. Next, add a fun sentence Poseidon might say. You can come up with your own or choose one of these:
"By my beard, who stirred up this splash-tastic storm?"
"Hold on to your snorkels, Bubble Buddies, the ocean’s about to get epic!"
"Tides, treasures, and tentacles, just another day in my kingdom!"
"Remember, Bubble Buddies: respect the sea!"
See you at next tide!
