Fishy Phrases!

Have you ever heard someone say, I'm in a pickle? It sounds a bit silly, right? But it just means someone is in a tricky spot, like a fish that suddenly finds itself somewhere it really doesn’t belong!

Fishy Phrases and What They Really Mean!

It turns out, the ocean and its amazing creatures inspire lots of cool sayings in our everyday language! Here are some fishy phrases that make talking extra fun:

A fish out of water
Imagine my friend Orestis the clownfish suddenly flopping onto dry land. YIKES! He’d feel super awkward. This phrase means someone feels uncomfortable or out of place in a situation that is new to them.

That's a whole different kettle of fish
This means something completely different from what you were just talking about!
One day, Athena was chatting about speedy dives, and suddenly Teresa mentioned her favourite algae. Athena laughed, “Whoa, Teresa! That’s a whole different kettle of fish!”

Plenty of fish in the sea
This is a saying that means there are many other options or opportunities available.
I remember the time when Apollo accidentally lost his favourite shiny pebble: I winked at him and said, "Don't worry, Orestis! There are plenty of fish in the sea... and plenty of shiny pebbles too!"

To clam up
Imagine a shy clam closing its shell really tight! If someone 'clams up', it means they suddenly become very quiet and stop talking, often because they're shy, scared, or don't want to share something.
One day Dimitra asked Apollo what secret snack he was munching on, he just clammed up and wouldn't say a word, hiding his claws quickly!

Did you know what they all meant? Or do you know even more fishy phrases?
Let's see who can come up with the most!

What you need: A bowl of fishy phrases written on slips of paper and a few friends.
How to play:
One of you draws a phrase (e.g., clam up) and silently acts it out.
The others guess the phrase.
You can play in teams and earn “bubbles” (points) for each correct guess.

🎉 Phrase Swap: Make Your Own Idiom!
Invent your own new ocean-themed idioms!
Example: Like a crab in a conga line (meaning: someone who loves to follow the crowd).
Write it down, draw it, and explain what it could mean.

🎉 Story Starter Challenge

Start a story using one of the fishy phrases! I was swimming with my friends when suddenly, I felt like a fish out of water... A friend continues the story and uses at least one more phrase.
