Want to be a pirate AND save the ocean? Now you can!
All across Europe, kids just like you are putting on their explorer hats and heading outside on a super important mission: finding plastic trash in rivers and helping scientists protect our water!
It's called Plastic Pirates and it's one of the coolest adventures EVER.
What's a Plastic Pirate?
A Plastic Pirate is a kid who:
๐ดโโ ๏ธ Explores rivers and streams near their home
๐ Hunts for plastic hiding in the water
๐งค Picks up trash (with gloves - safety first!)
๐ Counts what they find
๐ Helps real scientists understand where plastic goes
You don't just LEARN about science: you DO science!
How Does It Work?
It's like a treasure hunt... but instead of finding gold, you're finding plastic bottles, wrappers, and tiny bits of trash that shouldn't be in our rivers!
Here's what you do:
-
Go to a river or stream with your class or friends
-
Look for plastic on the banks and in the water
-
Collect it carefully (with help from grown-ups)
-
Count everything - big pieces, little pieces, all of it!
-
Tell scientists what you found by putting your data online
Then scientists use YOUR discoveries to learn how to keep rivers and oceans cleaner!

Why Does This Matter? ๐ข๐
Here's a cool thing to know: rivers flow all the way to the ocean. So when you pick up plastic from your neighborhood river, you're protecting:
-
Fish that live in the water
-
Turtles swimming in the sea
-
Dolphins jumping in the waves
-
All the ocean animals that might accidentally eat plastic
Plus, YOU! Because we drink water and eat fish, keeping rivers clean keeps US healthy too!
You Can Be Part of a HUGE Crew!
More than 25,000 kids in 14 countries have already become Plastic Pirates! They've explored over 360 rivers and streams: that's A LOT of rivers!
Some teams even make up fun pirate names like:
-
#PlasticPowerRangers ๐ช
-
#6cforever ๐ดโโ ๏ธ
What would YOUR pirate name be?
Real Kids, Real Science, Real Change
One scientist said: "Being a Plastic Pirate lets kids explore their own neighborhood and fall in love with nature."
And the best part? The information you collect doesn't just disappear. Scientists use it in their research. People who protect the environment use it to make rivers cleaner. Your work really helps!
Ready to Join the Adventure? โ
From Italy to Austria, Greece to Latvia, Plastic Pirates are proving that kids can change the world โ one piece of plastic at a time.
